A Stone Town tour is the perfect introduction to Zanzibar. The old quarter of Zanzibar City grew over centuries as a trading port linking Africa, Arabia and India, and its architecture, food and culture still reflect that mix.
Why take a Stone Town tour
With a local guide you avoid getting lost in the winding lanes and hear the stories you would miss on your own. Typical stops include Darajani Market, the Old Fort, the seafront and the Anglican Cathedral with its memorial to the East African slave trade.
You will also see many of Stone Town’s famous doors, whose carvings and brass studs once showed the wealth and status of the family inside. Small shops sell spices, textiles and local crafts, and there are plenty of cafes to stop for Zanzibari coffee.
A tour usually takes two to three hours and can be combined with Prison Island or a spice farm visit.
