The fishing village of Kizimkazi on Zanzibar’s southern tip is one of the best places in East Africa to see wild dolphins. Pods of bottlenose and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins live in the warm waters here, and early mornings give you the best chance of calm seas and active dolphins.
What to expect on a Kizimkazi dolphin tour
You head out by local boat with an experienced skipper who knows where the dolphins feed. When conditions are right, you can slip into the water with mask and fins and watch them swim past. Afterwards the boat moves to a nearby reef for snorkeling among colourful fish, starfish and corals.
Guides follow responsible viewing practices, keeping a respectful distance so the dolphins are never chased or crowded. Snorkeling gear is provided, and non-swimmers can enjoy the sightings from the boat.
This tour combines easily with a visit to Jozani Forest or a relaxed afternoon on the beach.
