The Maasai are one of East Africa’s best-known peoples, living alongside the wildlife in northern Tanzania and southern Kenya. A visit to a Maasai village, or boma, is a chance to learn about a culture that has kept many of its traditions for generations.
What happens on a Maasai cultural visit
You are welcomed by members of the community, often with a traditional song and the famous adumu jumping dance. Inside the village you can see homes built from wood, mud and cow dung, and learn how the Maasai raise cattle, which are central to their way of life.
Your hosts may show you how they make fire with sticks and explain their beadwork, clothing and customs. There is usually time to ask questions and buy handmade jewellery directly from the makers.
Visits are easy to add to safaris in the Ngorongoro area or near Tarangire and take about one to two hours.
