The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife areas. This huge volcanic caldera, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to large numbers of animals living on its grassy floor, including lions, elephants, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and the rare black rhino.
How the day trip works
We pick you up early from your hotel in Arusha and drive west through farmland and the town of Karatu to the crater rim, usually around three hours. From the rim, you descend to the floor for a game drive of several hours.
Lunch is served at a picnic site on the crater floor, often beside a hippo pool. In the afternoon you continue exploring before climbing back up to the rim and returning to Arusha by evening.
The day is long but rewarding. Bring a warm layer, as the rim can be cool in the morning.
