Tipping in Tanzania

Tipping in Tanzania is a normal part of travel, especially on safari. Guides, drivers, cooks and lodge staff earn a large share of their income from tips. However, many visitors are not sure how much to give, or when. This guide gives you clear, practical amounts so you can plan your budget with confidence.

Tipping in Tanzania: how much to tip your safari guide and lodge staff

Is Tipping in Tanzania Expected?

Tipping is not compulsory, but it is expected in the tourism industry. In general, a tip is a way to say thank you for good service. If the service is poor, you can give less. On the other hand, if your guide goes the extra mile, feel free to give more.

Note that tips are separate from park fees, which are set by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA). They are also not included in most safari prices, so add them to your budget. For a full picture of costs, see our guide to the average cost of a safari in Tanzania.

How Much to Tip on a Safari in Tanzania

The amounts below are common guidelines, not fixed rules. They are in US dollars, which is the easiest currency for tipping in Tanzania.

Safari Guide

Your guide is also your driver, tracker and teacher for the whole trip. Therefore, most travelers give about $20 to $30 per day from the group. For example, on a 7-day safari that comes to roughly $140 to $210 in total for your guide.

Lodge and Camp Staff

Most lodges and camps have a shared tip box at reception. As a rule, plan on about $10 to $15 per guest per day. The staff then share it among housekeeping, kitchen and waiting staff. In addition, you can tip a hotel porter $1 to $2 per bag.

Airport Transfer Drivers

For a short airport or hotel transfer, $5 to $10 per trip is common. Similarly, a guide on a half-day city tour usually receives about $10 to $15.

Restaurants

Some restaurants add a service charge to the bill. If they do not, leaving around 10% is a kind gesture.

Tipping in Tanzania on a Kilimanjaro Climb

A Kilimanjaro climb needs a bigger team, so tips work differently. Usually, the whole group pools tips and hands them over at a short ceremony on the last day. As a rough guide, per day for the group:

  • Lead guide: $20 to $25
  • Assistant guide: $15 to $20
  • Cook: $12 to $15
  • Porter: $8 to $10 each

Before you start, ask your operator how many crew members will join your climb. That way, you can work out your total budget in advance.

When and How to Tip

For safari guides, it is best to tip at the end of the trip, when you say goodbye. Similarly, lodge staff tips go in the tip box when you check out. For transfers, tip the driver at the end of the ride.

Put tips in an envelope and hand them over with a few words of thanks. Also, bring clean, recent US dollar notes in small denominations, because older or torn notes are often refused. Tanzanian shillings are fine too.

Tips for Tipping in Tanzania

  • Budget for tips before you travel, since they add up over a long trip.
  • Carry small notes, because change can be hard to find in the bush.
  • Tip each person directly, or use the staff box, so the money reaches the whole team.
  • Say thank you in Swahili with “asante sana”. Here is how to say hello in Swahili.

Final Thoughts

Tipping in Tanzania is a simple way to thank the people who make your trip special. In short, plan about $20 to $30 per day for your safari guide and $10 to $15 per guest per day for lodge staff. As a result, you will avoid surprises and travel with peace of mind. If you have questions about tips on your trip, just ask our team before you book.
