Overview - Rwanda’s Ultimate Rainforest Wilderness

Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa’s oldest and most biologically rich rainforests, offering an entirely different safari experience from Rwanda’s volcanic north and savannah east. Stretching across the mist-covered mountains of southwestern Rwanda, this extraordinary forest is a sanctuary of dense jungle vegetation, towering ancient trees, waterfalls, orchids, and an incredible concentration of primates. The park protects one of the continent’s most important montane rainforest ecosystems and serves as a critical water catchment area feeding both the Congo and Nile River basins. Every journey through Nyungwe feels immersive, wild, and deeply connected to nature.

The park is internationally renowned for its chimpanzee trekking experiences, where visitors venture deep into the forest at dawn to track energetic chimpanzee communities moving rapidly through the canopy. In addition to chimpanzees, Nyungwe is home to over thirteen primate species including colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys. Bird enthusiasts are equally rewarded, with hundreds of bird species thriving within the forest, many of them endemic to the Albertine Rift region. The biodiversity found here makes Nyungwe one of East Africa’s most important destinations for eco-tourism and conservation-focused travel.

Beyond wildlife, Nyungwe offers some of Rwanda’s most spectacular natural scenery and adventure activities. The famous canopy walkway suspended above the rainforest provides breathtaking views across endless green valleys and treetops while delivering a thrilling perspective of the forest ecosystem below. Numerous hiking trails wind through tea plantations, waterfalls, ridges, and deep jungle landscapes, making the park ideal for active travelers seeking exploration beyond traditional safari experiences. Nyungwe combines adventure, biodiversity, tranquility, and dramatic scenery into one of Africa’s fine
