Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only classic savannah safari destination and one of East Africa’s most remarkable conservation success stories. Located along Rwanda’s eastern border with Tanzania, the park protects a diverse landscape of rolling grasslands, open plains, wooded hills, papyrus swamps, and scenic lakes that create a completely different experience from the country’s mountainous rainforests. Named after the Akagera River which flows through its eastern boundary, the park offers visitors the opportunity to experience traditional African game drives while surrounded by breathtaking scenery and thriving wildlife populations.
Once heavily affected by poaching and habitat pressures, Akagera has undergone an extraordinary transformation through intensive conservation and wildlife restoration programs. Today, the park proudly hosts the Big Five including lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffaloes alongside giraffes, zebras, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species. The reintroduction of lions and black rhinos marked a major milestone in Rwanda’s conservation efforts, helping restore Akagera into a fully functioning savannah ecosystem. Wildlife sightings have steadily improved, making the park increasingly popular among luxury safari travelers and photographers seeking a quieter alternative to larger East African parks.
One of Akagera’s most distinctive features is its combination of land and water-based safari experiences. Lake Ihema and several interconnected lakes provide excellent opportunities for boat safaris where visitors can observe hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds, and elephants gathering along the shoreline. Sunrise and sunset game drives reveal spectacular golden landscapes filled with wildlife activity, while the park’s varied habitats support exceptional biodiversity throughout the year. Akagera offers a peaceful and intimate safari atmosphere where conservation, scenic beauty, and wildlife encounters blend together into an authentic African wilderness experience.0
