Safari Packing Checklist

Safari Packing Checklist for a safari requires moderation and practicality. While it’s not necessary to go minimalist, it’s important to avoid excessive luggage that can become a hassle during your safari adventure. Remember that you’ll be moving your luggage in the safari van and leaving it in your room when staying at hotels or lodges. Carrying too much luggage can interfere with your ability to enjoy wildlife sightings. To help you prepare for an incredible African safari in Tanzania, we have created a packing list based on years of experience running successful safaris:

Clothing:

  • 1 or 2 long shirts
  • Warm sweater or lightweight jacket
  • Lightweight shirts or t-shirts (1 per day of the safari)
  • 1 or 2 pairs of light cotton pants
  • Shorts or a flowy skirt (for women)
  • Swimwear or trunks (most lodges have a pool)
  • Comfortable and durable walking shoes (avoid platforms, stilettos, and high heels)
  • Colors and Fabrics:
  • Choose neutral-toned clothing to blend with the environment.
  • Khaki-colored clothing is less likely to show stains from dust.
  • Avoid bright whites or neon hues.

Weather Considerations:

  • Pack extra clothes for warmth, especially for mornings and nights.
  • Tanzanian weather can vary based on altitude and time of day.
  • Medications and Health Essentials:
  • Antimalarial medications (such as Malarone and Lariam)
  • Motion sickness medications (if prone)
  • Allergy-relieving antihistamines (Claritin, Loratadine, Azelastine)
  • Inhaler (for asthma, as dust may worsen symptoms)
  • Any necessary prescription medications
  • Insect repellent (mosquitoes are active in the morning and evening)
  • Sunscreen (use SPF 40 or higher)

Essential Items:

  • Safety glasses to protect your eyes from wind, dust, and insects
  • Binoculars (provided in safari vehicles, but you may bring your own if preferred)
  • Adapter for electrical sockets (Tanzania uses three-pronged plugs)
  • Sunglasses
  • Bandana or handkerchief for dust
  • Copies of travel documentation (including passport)
  • Camera and photography equipment
  • Personal hygiene products (sunscreen, bug repellent)
  • Hand sanitizer or disinfectant
  • Notebook and pen

Optional Snacks:

Cookies, chips, or packaged foods (biscuits)
Dried or pre-washed fruits
Chocolate bars
Assorted nut combinations
Remember, most partner hotels and lodges provide full accommodation and meals. However, the excitement and fresh air during safaris can work up an appetite. You can also purchase fruits and nuts from Tanzanian settlements while on the road.
